Open Call: Alchorisma

Alchorisma alludes to the relationships between algorithms, charisma, rhythm, alchemy and karma. Alchorisma is a Constant worksession which looks at integrating cosmogenetic views with the charisma surrounding technology. We look at ways to infect existing algorithmic models with positions that acknowledge the importance of co-existence with non-human entities. The Alchorisma worksession takes place from 2nd - 8 December 2018 at Z33, House for Contemporary Art in Hasselt, Belgium. Working language is English. As part of the School of Time exhibition that Z33 is preparing for the Istanbul Design Biennial coming up in September, we’re happy to reveal some of the first ideas and steps towards a new project, I am (not) a Monster, by designer Nelly Ben Hayoun. Throughout this research project Nelly Ben Hayoun intends to demonstrate the state of ideologies- their origins, formulation and power structures- in contemporary society. Trained by Noh theatre and Kabuki’s experts and Sumotoris in Japan, with Bunraku puppets in hand, Nelly Ben Hayoun will reenact and question the writings of Hannah Arendt while talking to philosophers and families about their views on the role of learning and education in society today. STUDIO TIME

Time is out of balance, both on an individual and on a global level. On the one hand, we are confronted with hyper-speed and acceleration, typical of the global 24h-economy, financial markets and the world of technology, big data and algorithms. On the other hand, there is an urgency to think about deep time: the slow time of Earth, climate change, the ongoing discussion on the anthropocene. While politicians and media seem only concerned with the issues of the day, the complex contemporary global economy requires long-term future visions. How do we deal with the many conflicts and paradoxes of time? How credible is the past? How real is the present? What are possible futures?
